Reducing Barbecue Cleaning
There are a number of cleaning barbecue tips that can produce a clean barbecue with less effort than you’d expect. With a little planning and care before starting the barbecue you can reduce the effort needed to clean the barbecue afterwards.

The first option is to use aluminium foil to cover the base and then place the coals on top. This is an obvious time saver because if careful, it can be picked up as one and disposed of easily, leaving just the grill to clean. The important thing to remember here is to leave the air inlets free, either by leaving them uncovered or by piercing the foil, so that there is through flow of air to sustain a hot barbecue.
When washing the grill there are a few cleaning barbecue tips available to reduce the amount of effort required:
- By washing grills as soon as you have finished cooking you reduce the time that the burnt fat left after cooking has to solidify and harden, making it easier to remove.
- Soaking the grills in hot water (the hotter the better) will loosen the substances on the grill making it easier to remove.
- Another option, similar to the above, is to wash the grills in a dishwasher first. This allows the heat and cleaning salts to loosen the tough substances gripping the grill so it can be removed with a little scrubbing.
- A wire brush, brillo pad or steel wool works more effectively than conventional sponges. When these are combined with a tough degreaser or cleaning salts the grill should look as good as new with relatively little effort.
- The use of gloves in the cleaning process is highly recommended as they provide a barrier to protect the skin from harmful abrasives in cleaning solutions and also from heat.
Disposable Barbecue Cleaning
A final set of cleaning barbecue tips focus on the use of disposable barbecues as an easy alternative as they require no cleaning.
- Ensure the disposable barbecue is used on a non-combustable surface
- Extinguish the coals fully before disposal
- Where possible, recycle the metal components
The problems with disposable barbecues are that they will not last as long, with burning time being relatively short, they are often limiting in space to cook, and they are not as enjoyable to cook on as the charcoal is too close to the grill, making it easy to burn food or leaving a heavy charcoal taste.
