End of the World Predictions for 2012.
These are based on a mixture of conjecture about ancient mayan calendars, and the modern astronomical predictions of an increase in sun spot activity. This is known as Coronal Mass Ejection or CME, and describes the increase in solar activity that occurs on an 11 year cycle. The peak in the cycle is know as the Solar Maximum, and is marked by the occurrence of 2 to 3 CMEs per day.
The consequences of this CME or Solar Maximum could be slight or devastating, depending on what happens in practice. The earth's magnetosphere will weaken allowing and increase in solar particles reaching the earth. The extra UV radiation could destroy plankton, resulting in problems in the food chain.
The National Academy of Sciences have looked at the impact of geomagnetic storms. They suggest an electricity block could take 4 to 10 years to repair.
These scientific predictions coincide with the ending of the Mayan calendar and the suggested end of the world as we know it. Whether the Mayan calendar marks the end of the world, or they just ran out of space or symbols, we will see in December 2012. It is predicted to occur on December 21st or 23rd 2012.
